Eyes: Dark brown, deep as the night sea, reflecting the glimmer of memories too old for the face that bears them.
Distinguishing Features
The left hand of Kawl shimmers faintly, its outline ghostly and half-lost to the world. Light passes through it as though through a veil, though it moves at his will. Scholars debate whether this is a wound upon the soul or a mark of the divine. Those who stand close to him speak of a numbness in the air — a sensation of being forgotten while standing beside him.
It is said that animals grow silent in his presence, and the wind stills, as if unsure whether he is among the living or the dead.
Personality
Quiet, observant, and deliberate in speech, Kawl embodies both a child’s curiosity and an elder’s restraint. He has the heart of one seeking redemption for something he does not remember — or perhaps remembers too well. He is kind but distant, ever aware of his fading form, as though afraid to burden others with his eventual vanishing.
Backstory
In the twilight years of the Empire of Lyonesse — when its marble towers still reached the heavens and the sound of hymns echoed through its glass cathedrals — a boy named Kawl was born to a modest family in a small town by the river Veir. He was the youngest of two brothers, inseparable from his elder.
When the Grace War began — the conflict between the Mage’s Guild and the Templar Order over the sanctity of immortalization — Lyonesse was torn apart. The Guild’s Gracemancers sought to bind soul to flesh, halting the decay of life itself. The Templars, servants of the old gods, called this an abomination of eternity. The Emperor, paralyzed by politics and prophecy, did nothing.
Rogue mages, desperate to prove their art’s worth, unleashed a ritual upon a quiet village — Kawl’s village. The fields burned with silver fire, and the souls of the people were stripped from their bodies in flashes of pale light. Kawl and his brother escaped, but their parents were lost — their bodies left intact, their spirits erased.
The brothers were found by Sir Lumpera, a knight of the Templar Spire — a man disillusioned with holy war but still bound by honor. He took them as wards, teaching them the old ways: swordcraft, healing, and the philosophy of balance between faith and will. Kawl grew swiftly under Lumpera’s care, learning both reverence and restraint.
But fate was not yet finished. When they finally reached Dolavon, far from the frontlines, Lumpera began to fade. His skin grew translucent, his voice echoing in strange harmonics. He had been touched by Grace — the same forbidden power that destroyed Kawl’s village. One night, as the stars dimmed, Lumpera vanished entirely, leaving only his sword and the faint scent of oak and iron.
It was then that Kawl noticed his own left hand beginning to fade.
Current Life
Now a wanderer of the Pale — the lands between light and lost — Kawl serves as a Protector of the Pale under the banner of the Moonfire Company, an order of knights, farmers, and mystics who defend the borderlands from the corrupted Lost.
Within The Moonfire Citadel, Kawl tends to the soil by day and hunts the shadows by night. His tiara of iron oak is both relic and curse — said to hold his fading spirit together. Some whisper that he cannot die, not until he finds the soul of his master, or his brother, or his parents — or perhaps all three.
Roleplaying Hooks
The Fading Curse: Kawl’s transparency spreads each year. He seeks scholars, seers, or relics that may restore his physical form — or at least reveal what lies beyond the fade.
Legacy of Lumpera: Somewhere in the ruins of Lyonesse lies the sword of Sir Lumpera, said to still carry the knight’s spirit.
Grace and Guilt: Kawl is both victim and vessel of the Grace that ruined his home. Mages and Templars alike hunt him — one to study, one to destroy.
Protector of the Pale: He guards the borderlands of Dolavon where the veil between worlds thins. Those who wander too close to the lost souls often find him waiting — silent, but never unkind.
